The number of artists in Utah is 10,000, and growing.
5/6 of the population is comprised of originating artists, i.e., creators of original works of art. The remaining 1/6 of the population is interpretive artists, that is interpreters of an existing work of art.

By discipline the individual artist population in Utah consists roughly of the following:

visual artists 41%
photographers 12%
crafts artists 9%
writers 15%
choreographers, dancers 5%
composers, musicians 9%
playwrights, theate 3%
media artists, audio artists 4%
et al., unknown 6.5%

In terms of arts dollars, interpretive artists receive 9/10 of available dollars (the symphony musicians’ salaries for example, via arts organization grants), while originating artists receive 1/10 of the available arts dollars (for individuals).

Of the thousands of students who graduate with art degrees each year, 1% of them make a living solely from their art. Another 2-3% make a living as university professors. Within ten years only one out of ten graduates is still making art.
