Creating a Nonprofit to “Help Utah Artists Thrive!” A convening of artists and artist supporters gathered to “think out loud together” around creating an organization to serve and support individual artists in all disciplines in our community. This day-long meeting established and strengthened relationships and defined the parameters of a beginning place from which to move. Thanks to the artful human processes employed by our facilitator, Tenneson Woolf, and thanks to the uniquely creative individuals present, we collectively produced a body of insight. 1) We recognized the absence of a “central station,” an orienting crossbar for navigating an artist’s world. Artists want some kind of co-op—a hub/portal/vehicle—with four primary aspects: technology (an internet portal), funding, education, and community. 2) Isolation is prevalent, inherent in many types of artist’s work and types of individuals.A center would offer opportunities to network, to make human connection with each other and with the larger community; provide a shared learning environment with interdisciplinary cross-fertilization, resources identified and information exchanged.3) Begin with identifying who/what we have now—organizations, individuals, structures, capacities.4) Assess artist needs and prioritize based on what is feasible, desirable and viable.5) Continue this visioning discussion with future comings together.
