Tay Haines, founder of Chez Artists

I am passionate in pursuing opportunities to more fully perceive—spiritually, intellectually, experientially—the essence of this human life. The arts and artists assist me in perceiving. Serving artists fulfills me.

In 2005 I established Chez Artists, LLC to provide education and consultation and advocacy services for individual artists.

Since 2004 I have assisted publishing essays related to G.I. Gurdjieff’s teaching on consciousness.

I came to Utah for the graduate program in modern dance at the University of Utah. I have a secondary teaching degree in modern dance from the University of Utah, a secondary teaching credential from UCLA, and a degree in English and Fine Arts from Stanford University (art coursework included: figure drawing, art history, sculpture history, design, film history, architecture, poetry, music).

I read: artist biographies, art criticism, fiction, and spiritual/personal growth literature. My favorite art forms: visual art (inclusive of craft and photography), dance, film, literature, architecture, design, theater, gardens, and food.

I joined the Utah Arts Council administrative staff in 1986, working with the Artist in Residence program for seven years. In 1992 I assumed responsibility for designing and programming Individual Artist Services, assembling a database of 4500 Utah artists, assessing their needs, designing and administering the grants and peer review for Artist Grants, establishing the Artist Resource Center and enlarging ArtOps newsletter of artist opportunities to include all artistic disciplines.  In 1998 I initiated and established the Individual Artist Endowment Campaign to increase grants dollars for artists. I assisted in the formation/revival of three artist organizations:  The Field—Fieldwork sessions for performing artists; Clay Arts, Utah; and Utah Designer Crafts. When the Artist Services program was eliminated, it was time for me to go.
